Donnie Darko is a 2001 cult classic psychological thriller film written and directed by Richard Kelly, and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, and Mary McDonnell. The film depicts the reality-bending venture of the eponymous character as he seeks the meaning and significance of his troubling end-of-the-world visions.
The film initially was slated for a direct-to-video release before it was picked up by Newmarket Films. Budgeted with $4,500,000 and filmed over the course of 28 days, the movie just missed breaking even, grossing just over $4,100,000 worldwide. The film has since gone on to receive favorable reviews from critics and a large cult following among fans, resulting in the Director's Cut of the film receiving a two-disc special edition release in 2004.[1] A sequel to the film, entitled S. Darko, is expected to be released in 2009.
